Aavegotchi Portals: ERC721 NFTs that Utilize Chainlink VRF

Hey frens, here’s your comprehensive guide to Aavegotchi Portals, ERC-721 NFTs that utilize Chainlink’s Verifiable Randomness Function. Learn the ins and out of Portals here and then get your own today!

What is an Aavegotchi Portal

Opening portals is the key to summoning an Aavegotchi. Each NFT Portal contains 10 Aavegotchis, each with totally random traits. Once a Portal is opened the Chainlink Verifiable Randomness Function (VRF) is called behind the scenes. Once VRF is engaged, The portal is assigned a random number ensuring the traits of the Aavegotchis inside are provably random. Once a Portal is opened the summoner will be presented with ten Aavegotchis to choose from. However, only one Aavegotchi may be summoned, the other nine are burned and gone forever.

How to Get a Portal

Unopened Portals in the Aavegotchi Baazaar

Currently the only way to purchase a Portal is through the Aavegotchi Baazaar, our NFT marketplace. For tips on navigating the Baazaar see our previous post Wearables: Increasing your Aavegotchi's Rarity. Within the Baazaar you can choose between an opened or unopened Portal which we will discuss further in the next section.
Another way to get Portals is by winning an NFT auction during a new Haunt. During new Haunts, a set number of Portals are introduced into the Aavegotchi ecosystem. New Haunts and specific amounts of new Portals must first be approved by the AavegotchiDAO. To stay up to date with information leading to new Haunts follow us on our social media channels.

Opened vs. Unopened Portals

When browsing Portals in the Aavegotchi Baazaar you will notice two different options, opened or unopened. The difference is quite obvious. ClosedPortals have not been opened and the Aavegotchis inside them have not been revealed. Opened Portals have already been opened and you can see each of the ten Aavegotchis inside.
There are benefits and negatives to each option. Closed Portals are typically more costly on the Aavegotchi Baazaar because there is a chance that an extremely rare Aavegotchi can be summoned, while Opened Portals tend to be a bit cheaper (depending on the contents) because the Aavegotchis inside have already been revealed. Which option you choose to purchase ultimately depends on your risk tolerance!

How to Summon an Aavegotchi from a Portal

If you purchased a closed Portal, you will need to open it. As mentioned above, after it is opened Chainlink VRF is engaged, ensuring the traits of each Aavegotchi within the Portal are verifiably random.

Once the Portal is opened you will have 10 Aavegotchis to choose from. Click the arrows to scroll through and review the traits of each one. Choose your Aavegotchi carefully and be sure to consider all factors such as rarity and aesthetics. You can only summon oneAavegotchi, the other nine will be burned forever.

After you select which Aavegotchi you wish to summon, you will need to provide it with Spirit Force (staked collateral) to bring it to life. To do this, click “get (Type of Spirit Force)” underneath the area that says “Amount to Stake.” From there, the Swapper Tool will appear and you will be able to swap GHST tokens for your required Spirit Force. Input the correct amount, click “Swap,” and then confirm the transaction and gas fees via your wallet. Once the transaction is confirmed you will click “Approve Transfer” and then “Claim With X Amount of specific Spirit Force”

After this transaction is confirmed you will see your new fren in the “My Aavegotchis” tab. From here you will be able to name your Aavegotchi and pet it for the first time!
